ToggleIs Coffee Enema a Type of Biohacking ?
I absolutely love jumping into health and fitness trends to either confirm or debunk an idea, practice, method or program of some sort.
Throughout my personal fitness training career I’ve become somewhat of a biohacker. From popular detoxing methods like infrared sauna therapy, to practices on the stranger (and not as effective as I’d like) routines like red light therapy on my head.
Most recently my experimentation has been about the recent reemergence of intermittent fasting and extended fasting for health benefits and fat loss.
I always insist on seeing some data, or evidence but the real world research is the fun part. So long as there’s a solid study out there and a bunch of people claiming to have success with whatever it is I’ll gladly be next in line.
What is Biohacking?
Let’s look at Biohacking types: Biohacking is a DIY approach to self-care and human enhancement that combines lifestyle changes, nutrition, supplements, and technology to optimize physical and mental performance, improve overall health, and potentially even extend the biohacker’s lifespan.
It involves experimenting with various methods to hack, or manipulate, the body’s biology to achieve specific goals, such as:
- Optimizing health: Reducing the risk of chronic diseases, improving sleep, boosting energy, and enhancing cognitive function.
- Enhancing performance: Improving physical fitness, increasing strength and endurance, and enhancing mental clarity and focus.
- Extending lifespan: Slowing down or reversing the aging process, and potentially increasing human lifespan.
Coffee Enema Cleanse for Detoxification
As with any type of biohacking I always want to make sure the benefits outweigh the pain or discomfort of the procedure. Some biohacking techniques are actually enjoyable, like infrared sauna for instance. On the other hand, I partake in some biohacking treatments which are almost intolerable. I have trouble describing just how uncomfortable I feel during cold plunge, yet I keep going back for more because of the awesome benefits.
The practice of coffee enema for health benefits has actually been around since the late 1800s. Every so often an old, tried and proven procedure, makes its way back into the spotlight as the latest and greatest biohacking trend. Enter Coffee Enema Detox.
Sure, it sounds like a pretty gross process, almost too gross to share with the world right here on the Level 9 blog. But I have no shame and I want you to achieve the benefits I’ve experienced every so often when I brew up a very special batch of coffee.
So if the topic of enemas is TMI for you, head over to our list of foods to avoid for fat loss in order to stay healthy and keep your metabolism high.
If you’re still here let’s dive right in.
Self-Administered Coffee Enema Questions
A few years ago the coffee enema cleanse was having a new surge of popularity. I realized I had to put my hesitations about the procedure aside and give it a go.
Before my first coffee enema my most pressing ‘What If’ questions outweighed the potentially embarrassing conversations I’d have with clients if this procedure actually worked.
Here are the top coffee enema questions I was pondering before my first time, plus the answers I found to be true:
Will the Coffee Enema hurt?
How long do I keep the coffee inside my body?
Will coffee enema work better if I do it multiple times?
Should I only use the coffee marketed as "Enema Coffee"?
Why Do a Coffee Enema Detox?
Let’s jump beyond the notion that you’d likely try a coffee enema because “everybody’s doing it“. Many experts report anxiety and depression are on the rise. If you’re searching for biohacking methods to reduce these conditions this coffee enema procedure could be a part of your toolkit.
To be clear, self-administered coffee enemas are not a silver bullet to solve any problems in a single procedure. Instead, I’d suggest looking at this and all procedures and practices as part of an overall approach to healthy living and self-care.
Physical Benefits of Coffee Enemas
The first and most obvious benefit you might be expecting from a coffee enema is a clean colon. In addition to colon cleanse you can expect some major antioxidant properties, This is thanks o the coffee binding and helping eliminate toxins from the colon. Many coffee detoxers also report reduced bloat throughout their entire body.
There’s currently some debate regarding coffee enema detox being utilized to help treat and relieve gallbladder sludge. Gallbladder sludge (cholecystitis) is a condition where bile from the liver backs up in the gallbladder. There is not enough evidence to support coffee enema as a treatment for this condition but it may be worth trying. Always talk to your medical professional before trying new treatments, even if the treatment is natural.
Mental Benefits of Doing a Coffee Enema
Coffee enemas have a long and documented history of helping treat depression. I can definitely say coffee enemas clear my head and when I do enemas two days in a row I feel super clear and focused. The clarity and increased concentration might partly be a result of the actual caffeine in the coffee but it’s more than that. It almost makes my head feel sharp and my mood is good. This feeling is strongest within those couple of days but does seem to stick around for a week or so.
How to Do a Coffee Enema, Step by Step
- Get your hands on a bag of Organic Coffee, you do not need to purchase specific coffee enema coffee products
- Brew a strong pot of said coffee
- Let the brewed coffee stand for cooling about 15 to 20 minutes
- Pour coffee into a BPA-free enema bag (don't skimp on your enema bag)
- Lay towels on the floor so you have a comfortable pot to lay
- Insert the enema tube into your butt
- Lay down on your right side of your body
- Partially unclamp the hose
- Let coffee slowly enter your body
- Stop at half the bag and wait about 30 seconds before continuing
- and slowly let about half of the enema solution flow in, about 2 cups. Stop a bit sooner if you feel “full.”
- Do your best to hold the coffee in your body for 15 to 25 minutes (around 20 mins is ideal)
- After at least 15 minutes remove the hose and make your way to the toilet
- Let it all go!
- Before cleaning up and exiting (or a shower would be best) try to relax as much as possible and stay seated. You may think you're done and get surprised.
Final Thoughts About Coffee Enema Detox
Assuming you’re well over the fact that this process may seem gross, it should be obvious it might be worth the discomfort for you to give it a go.
As I mentioned earlier, coffee detox enema alone isn’t going be a life changing. It could, however, be a part of a multifaceted self-care routine.
The feeling after a coffee enema detox has been described as “refreshing” as well as “a light clean feeling inside and out!” and the destressing benefits are notable for most people too.
The long history and scientific evidence about the many benefits of coffee enemas prove it can be a worth while procedure. The physical and mental benefits prove a weekly or monthly coffee detoxification via the colon can help reset you in multiple ways. After the first coffee enema, many people make it a monthly or even weekly part of their self care routine!
